Partido explores the convergence of percussive dance with contemporary urban styles in African-American and Afro-Brazilian culture.  The piece highlights the deep connections between music and dance of African origin in Brazil and the US and links styles like samba and house dance through shared rhythms and footwork.  Through vibrant, playful percussive choreography and music, Partido addresses questions of cultural identity and race, highlighting and celebrating a shared heritage.  

In Phase, for two dancers, Sandoval plays with the rhythmic possibilities he finds within the boundaries of Steve Reich’s minimalist music.

Leonardo Sandoval

Brazilian tap dancer Leonardo Sandoval has become known in the tap world and beyond for his musicality and for adding his own Brazilian flavor to tap.  A true dancer-musician, he is in demand as a choreographer, solo dancer, and jazz musician, as well as dancing with acclaimed company Dorrance Dance.  Leo has toured the world performing venues including the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, London’s Sadler’s Wells, and the National Folk Festival.  His artistry is rooted in America’s great jazz and tap dance heritage, Brazil’s rich rhythmic and musical forms, and contemporary urban dance.

Gregory Richardson

Born to a family of musicians where everyone was expected to play and sing, Gregory Richardson is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and co-creator of Music From The Sole, an Afro-Brazilian tap dance show that is currently in residence at Lincoln Center Education.  He is the co-musical director of Dorrance Dance, with whom he has premiered original compositions at New York City Center on three occasions, most recently in collaboration with Bill Irwin.  He has played with the band Darwin Deez at music festivals around the world including Glastonbury, Splendor In The Grass, Summer Sonic, and Donauinselfest.
