HOW TO APPLY
APPLICATION PREVIEW

Can I apply to more than one of the intern positions?

Yes, we encourage you to apply for all positions you are interested in filling. Please make clear you are applying for multiple positions in the appropriate section of the Internship Application.

Do I have to be a dancer in order to apply for this internship?

No, you do not have to be a dancer, but you must be excited to engage creatively. Interns are expected to attend daily Community Dance Class and contribute creatively to our summer season. While most of our past interns have been dancers, we have provided opportunities for costume designers, lighting designers, musicians, and visual artists to create and share work.

Community Dance Class is intended for all ages, skill levels, and abilities. While our studio is not fully ADA compliant yet, we are committed to working with people with disabilities to the fullest extent of our site and staff capabilities.

Is there a minimum age for applying?

Yes, you must be at least 21 years-old by May 18th, 2020 to apply. Our apologies, but we cannot make exceptions.

I am in college and interested in applying to your internship but the ending date interferes with when I start the fall semester again. Can I leave early?

Unfortunately, due to the nature of our internship, we cannot accommodate interns arriving late or leaving early. Please apply in the future.

How many days off do we get? Will I have a lot of free time?

The YARD ARTS Summer Season is an extraordinarily busy time for our staff. Each Intern's schedule varies by department, and an example schedule will be reviewed in the info webinars. All interns typically work full days from Monday-Saturday, with Sundays off, and The Yard hosts 2-3 evening events a week.

Here is a look at what this day could look like for you:

  • 9:00 - 10:30am Community Dance Class

  • 10:30am - 6:00pm A busy day of working in your specific role at The Yard (with a lunch break, of course!)

  • The evening: Helping to put on a performance at The Yard, which includes pre-show, during-show, and post-show responsibilities, as well as meeting and interacting with our artists and patrons.

Most weeks, The Yard presents performances on Thursday and Saturday evenings, and you will be involved in the preparation and presentation of those performances. The entire company takes most Sundays off throughout the summer, and each intern is eligible for two additional days off (which must be requested in advance). Depending on scheduling, your supervisor may grant additional time off if requested in advance.

When will I find out if I am accepted to the internship program?

You will find out by April 1, 2020 at the latest. Offers will likely be made earlier in the spring, as applications will be reviewed as they are received. We encourage you to apply early.

Where do I live during the internship?

All interns live in the staff house on property, called the “SideYard.” Interns share a room with one other person. The house contains a full kitchen, two bathrooms, an extra outdoor shower, deck, living room, and laundry facilities.

Should I bring my car with me?

If you have a car and can bring it, then yes. The Yard is located in the more characteristically rural part of Martha’s Vineyard, and having a car makes it easier to explore the full island. We have three company cars available for artist transportation, errands, and other company business. We also have bikes for you to use, and Martha’s Vineyard has a bus system with bus passes for purchase.

Can I apply if I’m not a US Citizen?

Unfortunately at this time, The Yard's Internship Program cannot accommodate international applicants unless the applicant has a student or work visa secured through his or her embassy. Please check back for further opportunities in the future and thank you for your interest.
